Hello there!
I feel like I've written "Welcome to Roy Reading Company!" a disgusting amount of times, but I'm willing to do it one more time for the sake of you lovely people. Well...without further ado...
Welcome to Roy Reading Company! If you've actually pursued finding this blog, I thank you kindly. If you've accidentally stumbled upon this concoction and aren't quite sure how you feel about it quite yet- I hope you enjoy! This is my first attempt at starting a blog and I'm very excited about the opportunities at hand!
I feel like every profound, first blog post has to discuss how their blog came to be and I guess I'll be profound and prolific. The story of how this blog is so glorious, I'm not even sure words can describe it.
Like all good ideas, the concept behind this blog was developed whilst I was in the shower. I had just come off a shift at work (I work at pretty amazing bookstore), and I had just had a very long conversation about Beauty and the Beast books and it was like lightning struck me. I realized how much I love books and reading and how passionate people are about the books they love, and I wanted another way to explore that. Sure there's Goodreads, and a ton of other blogs but I had been looking for an outlet for all my creative juices (as my creative writing is currently suffering a dry spell) and I wanted away to have similar conversations to the ones I have with my coworkers, but with the whole world.
So I went home and tried (and failed) to make a blog, quit for a week, and then decided to try again. And before I knew it I was journaling ideas for blog posts and shooting content and I now I'm on a roll!
I want to tell you a little bit about myself as a writer/reader so you have an idea of whose ideas you're exploring! First off, my name is Kayla and come this fall I'll be a freshman at Boston College (Go Eagles!) and I'll be an English major (duh.). I've loved reading since I was a little girl, and I first learned to read when I was four, wrote my first picture book when I was six, started my first book when I was nine, and by the time I was fifteen I had started seriously writing my first full-length novel. I was always the girl that stayed up way past her bedtime reading under the covers. My best friends were the characters in my favorite stories, and I didn't learn my most important lessons in a classroom, but rather between the pages of books. I ate, read, breathed, read, read some more, slept and then woke up early to read and continue the process all over again.
As each angsty middle schooler knows, the most important thing in life is to be cool. Well when I was in middle school, reading was so not cool. So in a senseless attempt to be cool, I threw away all of my books, shoving them into the tight slot in a donation bin and said goodbye to all of my dearest friends. My love for reading was not rekindled until my sophomore year of high school. Until then I had been drowning in high school work and attempting to make new friends in real life (I was somewhat successful). My love returned me when a new bookstore opened on the other side of town. I walked through the doors and breathed in the smell of dark roast coffee, crisp new pages and dried ink and I knew I found home. I started that day with a bag full of new books, and then went back a few days later. Before I knew it I was there doing homework or reading or at a book club meeting, and then I was there five days a week. In fact I was there so often, my phone started to think the bookstore was work before I even got hired from driving the same route over and over again. And then I went to my first book signing (thank Richelle Mead, love your work) and I realized I had fallen hopelessly, head over heels in love with the world of words and books. And that love, has only grown stronger everyday, and here I am.
So now I have thoroughly welcomed you and have given you my entire life story! If you're still reading I hope you enjoyed my first post and are as excited as I am to get to the good stuff- the books of course! Thank you so much for reading! I'll be putting up a blog post soon with my first ever book review that I'm super excited for!
